I had to break my board sabbatical to reply to this -
"She could always stay in Edin and drink tea with the rest of the little old Edinburgh Lady's, pretending so hard to be English and "cultured ".
Too true - although don't mention 'Craigmillar'.
" If you choose to follow Matt's suggestion and shop for a kilt in Glasgow, you're also far more likely to be stabbed or shot by the firiendly Weegies. "

Underground vaults of Edinburgh
by Virgogirl inthe travel channel aired a show, "most haunted" featuring the city walks and horribly, macabre underground vaults of edinburgh.
supposedly the poor lived beneath the streets in caves and caverns where robbery and murder took place.
the ghosts said to roam the underground rooms are angry and agressive with visitors, sometimes touching, pushing, or calling their names.

witnoid weddings
by katiekitten inwhen i was a kid weddings in the troof were a big deal.
probably because they were the main if not only excuse for a knees up.
if someone was getting married they were not in control of the decisions about the reception.

Katie - what a great post - I'm sitting here with the tears running down my cheeks!
I have been to a few witnoid weddings too. Most of them were done on the cheap so the closet home brewers came into their own with specialities such Chateu de Jah and stuff like that. What was particularly funny was seeing the brothers that couldn't hold their drink - 2 pints and a lot of them were three sheets to the wind followed by the inevitable reproof.
Also funny was the bride usually being taken aside for a last minute 'pep talk' from their mother, I always tried to eavesdrop but never quite managed it!

Hi Cazza - Welcome to the board.
You have raised a lot of good points here. I can't help thinking that your main motivator here is fear, principally fear of armageddon etc. When people leave the JWs it's hard to shift the fear of Armageddon. The WTS makes it a clear focus of all their activities, as everything you do in the organisation is supposed to go towards your Armageddon protection policy.
Surely an organisation which uses fear to control behaviour is very far removed from the original concept of Christianity. Time is rolling on and still no sign of the end of the world, each so called 'date' has come and gone. Don't let this fear ruin your life - enjoy what you have now instead of dreading the future.I had so many similar questions about the Paradise Earth and never got any satisfactory answers, just the cover all things response - 'Leave it to Jehovah'.
The loving God as portrayed by the JWs is not one who would strike down millions of honest, decent people (including innocent children) just because they are not part of a small cult. These two ideas are too conflicting to be credible. If you really push a JW they will have to admit that they believe that everyone who is not part of their org will perish - classic command and control strategy. They are reluctant to say it at times but that is their core belief.
Please don't torture yourself about this - as you read more on the site you will see that there are many high calibre biblical scholars who are able to point out the misinterpretations of the JWs. I would agree that reading Crisis of Conscience would be a good start - keep reading the site and hope you will stick around.

JW kids who are currently in college LOVED the convention drama!
by urbanized inhere's a transcript of a post about the 2005 godly obedience convention (which i read about on this board and seemed to highlight a drama in which a biblical story was highly distorted in order to discourage higher education) from a jw youth group on www.myspace.com.

hey everyone!

Y'know, with these sickly sweet gushings I wonder if they're actually trying to convince themselves more than anything else. It reminds me of being a JW kid - you had to say all those kinds of things to keep up the facade and because it was the 'right' thing to do.FF

Is not the field of HR grand? ROFLMAO
Too right jeannie! As one who has experience in this field I agree with everything Swift has said. What has struck me significantly is the lack of effort made by a lot of interviewees. The boot is on the other foot - i.e. the interviewer has to impress the candidate instead of the other way about.

Other Types of Abuse...
by RichieRich inanyone who regularly reads this site is well aware of the sexual abuse scandals amongst jw congregations worldwide.
(for those not familiar, visit www.silentlambs.org).
not to make light of those who were sexually abused, but i think there is an epedimic of other types of abuse in the org.. how many here have been, or know of, someone who was "spanked" regularly and excessively?

This is something I feel very strongly about. I was never disciplined at the hall - probably because I used to go into a wee day dream most of the time, and my mum is not a 'spanker'. However, I always remember - I' ve posted this before - a particular family who used to overdo the discipline, particularly towards their older son.
Tuesdqay night book study was the worst as he was inevitably dragged into the hallway for, as we Scots say, a good leathering. I have never forgotten his cries of anguish, and for what, not being able to sit still during a turgid discussion of same old same old.
He was one of my childhood friends, and I have heard he is no longer a JW. I don't get much info from my mum as it's not the done thing to discuss those who have 'fallen away'.

Jehovah Witnesses Live in a Conflicting Environment (link)
by Bryan injehovah witnesses live in a conflicting environment.
for over 125 years the watchtower bible & tract society has been proclaiming the end of the world is nigh.
it is to be replaced with a new order where only those espousing their beliefs will live.
